After a week of tramping north on the MS Nordkapp I remember this blog. I blame the over abundance of food.
Anyway, for the remainder of the trip I’ll stick up camera phone shots and then the good stuff once we’re back in the UK
Tory press pretends nothing is happening and tries to divert & distract attention. I pity those who only get their news from the Daily Mail, the Telegraph & their ilk.
“If the innocent have nothing to fear, why waste millions of pounds seeing what they’re doing?”
I think that does a pretty good job of summing it up.
So, there’s a fan / grass roots thing organised each year called “Nutella Day”, organised since 2007 and no harm to anyone combined with a side order of free promotion for the product and it’s producers.
A cease and desist letter demanding that it stops.
Excellent move guys, you’ve just stamped hard on someone who spent the last seven years promoting you and your product, and created a whole pile of really bad publicity.
I wonder how that will be reported at the annual meeting and in the P&L statement.
Copied below is the statement from http://www.nutelladay.com/so it’s archived before the site goes dark.
A Goodbye to World Nutella Day?
On May 25, 2013, I’ll be darkening the World Nutella Day site, nutelladay.com, and all social media presence (Facebook, Twitter), in compliance with a cease-and-desist I received from lawyers representing Ferrero, SpA (makers of Nutella).
Seven years after the first World Nutella Day in 2007, I never thought the idea of dedicating a day to come together for the love of a certain hazelnut spread would be embraced by so many people! I’ve seen the event grow from a few hundred food bloggers posting recipes to thousands of people Tweeting about it, pinning recipes on Pinterest, and posting their own contributions on Facebook! There have been songs sung about it, short films created for it, poems written for it, recipes tested for it, and photos taken for it.
The cease-and-desist letter was a bit of a surprise and a disappointment, as over the years I’ve had contact and positive experiences with several employees of Ferrero, SpA., and with their public relations and brand strategy consultants, and I’ve always tried to collaborate and work together in the spirit and goodwill of a fan-run celebration of a spread I (to this day) still eat.
I have hope that this is not a goodbye to World Nutella Day forever, for the fans’ sake, and hopefully it will live on in one form or another in the future.
I’ve spent hundreds of hours interacting with you, the fans, collecting and sharing your contributions, updating the World Nutella Day website with more than 700 recipes which were painstakingly gathered from bloggers sending me their posts and by scouring the internet for the best Nutella recipes, Tweeting and sharing on Facebook your favorite sayings, stories, and links about Nutella, and encouraging everyone to try it just once!
Thanks for letting me be a part of that – it was truly a labor of love by a fan and something I did as a fan, in my (very little) spare time, and I have a full-time job I love. I hope that February 5th stays alive in your hearts and on your spoons, and hopefully it’s arrivederci (see you soon) and not addio (goodbye).
Founder and co-host, World Nutella Day, 2007 – 2013.
Lots of the normal cockwaffle from the religious right in the UK (mostly tories but with some fellow travelers from around the house) about how marriage is purely a thing between male and female, ordained by their version of god. (The numbers aren’t in yet on the Public Whip site).
The gem of the debate as far as I’m concerned comes from former Conservative defence minister Sir Gerald Howarth who believes there is a “aggressive homosexual community” out there. I assume they’re badgering him to get out there for a bit of cottaging and demanding that there are compulsory lessons in various “deviant” sexual practices from the day kids start at school.
So here’s a thing, there’s nothing in any law which says “you must be gay” or “you must fuck people of the same sex”, in the same way there is no law saying that sexual intercourse must occur only at home, with the lights off and then without any contraception with the aim of creating lots and lots of babies for god and country.
Apparently Sir Gerald fears that “there are plenty in the aggressive homosexual community who see this as but a stepping stone to something even further”. No details on the “something” of course, allowing him to slur anyone who supports the bill as supporting all sorts of possible evils.
Let’s have a look at some of the things which have been hinted at in the past.
- Pagan Weddings – Where’s the problem, seriously…
- Polyamourous (multiple partner) weddings – Again, seriously where’s the problem. Ok the pension and other aspects will be a bitch but is this about tradition (I’m sure there are plenty of traditions out there which can be called on to support this one) or jealousy
- Beastality – Errr, even if you believe the “aggressive gays” are in support of this it’s not going to happen if only because various other animal protection laws and “consent” kick in.
- Child weddings – Age of consent / Various UN and EU controls etc etc, again not going to happen
So, Sir Gerald, please go back to the 14th Century where you belong.
Non-Europeans appear to have some trouble understanding the concept. A comment I read today sums it up perfectly, in much the same way as karaoke bonds Japanese businessmen through mutual embarassment Eurovision bonds the countries who take part.
Seriously, who would take any threats from the Ukraine seriously after seeing this
Moving on to last night we must hand out the awards
“Best” Dress and “Is that hair or a replacement for the Sydney Opera House” : Moldova
The dress, dubbed the “Volcano” last night on irc.
“Needs more coffee” : Hungary
“Was robbed!!” : Romania & Greece
First we have the Ming the Mercilless, seriously voters, were you watching the same show this should have won both on singing capability and sheer Europop camp.
Followed by the Greek Ska band
“Boy inna box does strange things” : Azerbaijan
“Contestant enjoying himself the most” : Malta
Just look at that bloody grin
And the actual winner who ticked the “Political vote” / “Brought up by the faeries” / “bouncy tune” boxes, though it is a solid “Eurovision” tune so it was a good winner. Oh drums and a tin whistle.
However if this news is accurate then I’m going to be closing down that as well
I know and understand that if there is no fee, then I’m the product. Facebook, Google, Feedly etc etc all make their money by using information about me to sell advertising which is focused around me, my interests and the nature of what I’m looking at.
However intrusive ads which ram themselves into my world in this manner really are my break point for any service. It’s where the balance between me looking at the content and the content being shoved in my face and more importantly into my world.
Facebook is bad enough with the ads in the timeline, the re-shares of “share this if you’re against $foo” crap, game spam etc etc.
So, where next. It’s starting to feel like I should just completely junk social media (Twitter got canned completely because to be frank I’m sick to death of the whole thing and the way some people seem to enjoy jumping on my head), LJ is a ghost town, FB has always been suspect with the whole privacy side of things.
